IPRA GATE

Product Description

This product, marketed by Healthgate, is Ipratropium Nebuliser Solution BP 500 mcg, branded as Ipragate. The medication is presented in a white box with curved orange and red band accents, featuring multi-colored ring graphics. The packaging indicates it contains 4 strips of 5 ampoules (respules), each holding 2 ml of solution (a total of 20 respules). A sealed foil pouch in the foreground contains a single strip of 5 respules. The label specifies “For inhalation only” and “Preservative Free.”

Product Composition

This medication is an inhalation solution containing a single active ingredient:

  • Ipratropium Bromide (BP): Expressed as 500 mcg per respule. Ipratropium is an anticholinergic bronchodilator. It works by blocking certain nerve receptors (muscarinic receptors) in the lungs, which causes the muscles around the airways to relax. This relaxation widens the airways (bronchodilation), allowing easier breathing.

Summary

Ipragate is a nebuliser solution containing the bronchodilator Ipratropium Bromide. It is a prescription-only medication used primarily for the long-term (maintenance) treatment of bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. While primarily for maintenance, it may also be used in acute exacerbations of asthma, often in combination with other bronchodilators, to provide symptom relief and ease breathing difficulties. By relaxing the airway muscles, it increases airflow to the lungs. It is not intended for rapid relief of acute symptoms (as a “rescue” inhaler).

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Effective Airway Opener: Provides reliable and sustained bronchodilation for COPD management.

  • Convenient Nebulisation Form: Ideal for patients who cannot use a standard metered-dose inhaler (MDI) effectively, such as children, the elderly, or those with severe respiratory distress.

  • Preservative-Free: May be better tolerated by patients who have sensitivities to preservatives.

Cons

  • Requires Equipment: Requires a nebuliser machine, making it less portable and convenient than an MDI or dry powder inhaler.

  • Not a Fast-Acting “Rescue” Inhaler: Takes approximately 15-30 minutes to begin working; not for immediate relief of a sudden attack.

  • Potential for Common Side Effects: Common side effects can include dry mouth, nausea, headache, dizziness, or stomach upset.

  • Contraindications: Use with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma or urinary retention (especially enlarged prostate), as anticholinergics can worsen these conditions.

How to Use

This medication is available by prescription only and must be used with a nebuliser machine strictly under medical supervision. Below is a general guide. Follow your doctor’s specific instructions and the nebuliser manufacturer’s guidelines exactly.

  1. Preparation: Wash your hands thoroughly. Prepare your nebuliser machine for use according to its specific manual.

  2. Open the Ampoule (Respule): Twist off the top of one (1) single-use Ipragate ampoule, as specified by your doctor’s prescribed dose.

  3. Transfer the Medicine: Carefully squeeze the entire contents of the ampoule into the nebuliser medication cup. Do not mix this medication with any other medicines in the cup unless directed by your doctor.

  4. Administer the Treatment: Assemble the nebuliser cup with the mouthpiece or face mask. Turn on the nebuliser machine. Breathe in and out slowly through your mouth until all the medication mist is gone (typically 10-15 minutes).

  5. Post-Treatment: Rinse your mouth with water after use to reduce the chance of side effects like dry mouth or infection. Clean the nebuliser components according to the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent contamination.

  6. Discard Used Ampoule: Discard the empty single-use ampoule safely. Use a new ampoule for each treatment. Do not save any remaining solution.

  7. Course of Treatment: Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed. Do not miss doses, even if you are feeling better.

  8. Inform Your Doctor: Tell your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, especially glaucoma, urinary problems, or allergies to other anticholinergic drugs. Inform them of all other medications you are taking.

  9. Seek Medical Help Immediately: Contact your healthcare provider at once if your breathing difficulties worsen after a treatment, or if you experience serious side effects such as eye pain, blurred vision, difficulty urinating, or severe dizziness.
