Mistovate-FT nasal spray

Product Composition

The image shows a nasal spray with the following specifications:

  • Active Ingredient: Fluticasone Furoate.

  • Concentration: 27.5 mcg (micrograms) per spray.

  • Volume: 12g bottle.

  • Capacity: 120 Metered Doses.

  • Drug Class: Corticosteroid (Glucocorticoid).

Summary

Mistovate-FT is a corticosteroid nasal spray used primarily to manage symptoms of allergic rhinitis (both seasonal and year-round). It works by reducing inflammation, swelling, and irritation in the nasal passages. Unlike “decongestant” sprays that provide instant but temporary relief, this is a preventative medication designed for long-term control of allergy symptoms.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Effective Relief: Targets multiple symptoms including sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose, and nasal congestion.

  • Low Systemic Absorption: Most of the medicine stays in the nose; very little enters the bloodstream, reducing the risk of body-wide side effects.

  • Non-Drowsy: Does not cause the sleepiness often associated with oral antihistamines.

  • Once-Daily Dosing: Usually provides 24-hour relief with a single application.

Cons

  • Not Instant: It does not work immediately. It can take 8–24 hours to start working and several days of consistent use to reach maximum effect.

  • Local Irritation: May cause minor nosebleeds, nasal dryness, or a stinging sensation.

  • Consistency Required: Effectiveness drops significantly if doses are missed.

  • Taste/Smell: Some users may notice an unpleasant aftertaste or scent.

How to Use

To get the best results and avoid side effects like nosebleeds, follow these steps:

  1. Prime the Bottle: If using for the first time (or if not used for several days), shake well and spray into the air until a fine mist appears.

  2. Clear Your Nose: Gently blow your nose to clear the passages.

  3. Positioning: Tilt your head slightly forward. Hold the bottle upright.

  4. The “Opposite Hand” Rule: Use your right hand for your left nostril (and vice versa). Point the nozzle outward toward the ear, away from the “septum” (the middle wall of the nose). This prevents irritation and bleeding.

  5. Spray and Breathe: Close one nostril with a finger. Insert the tip into the other nostril and press the pump while breathing in gently through your nose.

  6. Exhale: Breathe out through your mouth.

  7. Clean Up: Wipe the nozzle with a clean tissue and replace the cap.

Important Safety Note

Avoid spraying this directly onto the middle wall of your nose, as it can cause tissue thinning or septal perforation over time. If you experience severe nosebleeds or vision changes, contact your doctor immediately.
