Duolizer

Product Description

The Duolizer Inhaler is a prescription-only, pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) from Healthgate. It is a combination medication containing two bronchodilators that work in different ways to improve breathing in adults with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. This inhaler is designed for maintenance treatment to keep airways open on a day-to-day basis and can also provide some relief from active symptoms. It is CFC-free.

Product Composition: This fixed-dose combination delivered by the actuator contains:

  • Levosalbutamol: A short-acting beta2-agonist (SABA).

  • Ipratropium Bromide: An anticholinergic.

  • Quantity: 200 Metered Doses (200 puffs).

Summary: Duolizer Inhaler provides maintenance treatment for adults with COPD by using two types of medicines to relax and open the airways. It combines a short-acting bronchodilator (levosalbutamol) with a long-acting one (ipratropium) for sustained effect. Regular, twice-daily use is typical to prevent symptoms. A doctor determines the precise dose.

Pros:

  • Combination Action: Uses two different mechanisms to broaden and sustain the bronchodilator effect, providing more relief than either drug can alone.

  • Maintenance: Effectively helps to prevent breathlessness and flare-ups when used daily, maintaining improved lung function.

  • Convenience: Delivering both medicines in one easy-to-use device with many doses helps reduce the need to coordinate multiple separate inhalers.

Cons:

  • Not a Fast-Acting Rescue Inhaler for Sudden Attacks: While it has some relief properties, it is not fast enough for immediate relief of a severe, acute asthma or COPD attack. A separate, short-acting rescue inhaler is always needed for emergencies.

  • Side Effects: Common side effects include throat irritation, hoarseness, coughing, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, nausea, tachycardia (racing heartbeat), or muscle cramps.

  • Proper Technique is Essential: Correct inhalation technique (coordinate pressing and deep breathing) is crucial to ensure medication reaches the lungs. Poor technique can result in ineffective delivery.

  • Risk of Dry Mouth/Throat: Anticholinergics like ipratropium frequently cause a dry mouth.

How to Use

Do not skip doses; use this inhaler exactly as your doctor prescribed.

Basic steps for using a pressurized metered-dose inhaler:

  1. Prepare: Wash your hands. Remove the cap from the mouthpiece and check for dust or lint. Shake the inhaler well (5-10 seconds) before use.

  2. Test Spray (If necessary): If the inhaler is new or has not been used for more than 7 days, release two test sprays into the air.

  3. Position: Stand up straight or sit upright.

  4. Breathe Out: Breathe out as completely as possible.

  5. Seal and Actuate: Place the mouthpiece of the inhaler in your mouth, sealing your lips tightly around it. Do not bite the mouthpiece. Start breathing in slowly and deeply through your mouth. Immediately after you begin to breathe in, press down firmly once on the top of the canister.

  6. Hold Your Breath: Continue breathing in slowly until your lungs are full. Remove the inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for about 10 seconds, or for as long as is comfortable.

  7. Exhale and Rinse: Breathe out slowly. Replace the cap. After your required dose, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and spit it out. Do not swallow the water. This is especially important for anti-inflammatory steroids, but mouth rinsing is generally recommended for all chronic inhaler use to minimize throat side effects.

  8. Repeat (if prescribed): If your doctor prescribed more than one puff, wait about 1 minute before repeating steps 3 through 6. Shake the inhaler again before the next puff.
